Scrub Yarn: Ultimate guide to selecting the best for your next scrubby yarn project
Fun scrubby yarns – they are so hard to resist! And now you don’t have to! The Ultimate Scrub Yarn Guide will help you choose the best scrubby yarn for your next knit project!
Knitting dishcloths is one of my favorite pastimes. In fact, I believe it’s the perfect way for beginners to learn how to knit. Despite my many dishcloth patterns, one thing has been missing: scrubby yarn. Not a single pattern of mine features it—and there’s a good reason. If you’re just learning to knit, scrubby yarn isn’t your friend. It’s tricky to work with and best left for when you’ve mastered the basics.
But for seasoned knitters curious about tackling scrubby yarn—whether it’s classic or even sparkly scrubby yarn—this guide is for you. I’ve done the hard work of digging through the many scrubby yarn options out there so you don’t have to. And believe me, there’s a surprising variety. To keep things manageable, I’ve limited this guide to 14 yarns, but if you love it and want more, let me know by leaving a comment saying, “More scrub yarn!”
Let’s dive into the ultimate guide to finding the best scrubby yarn for your next project.
Why create an ultimate guide of scrub yarns?
One post that I have had for a couple years now, “3 Cotton Yarns Explained” features a couple scrub yarns. It is one of my most popular posts to date. So, I felt like there was a real need out there for a deeper look at scrubby yarns.
And if you landed on this page, one thing is certain… You want a yarn you can scrub with, a scrub yarn, if you will. But which one is best? What is actually available out there?
Welcome to the ultimate guide to selecting the best for your next scrubby yarn project!

Variations in Scrub Yarns
Maybe you are not a noob into scrub yarn like I was. But if you are, let me just tell you all scrub yarn is NOT created equal. Not all scrub yarns are created equal. Here are the main categories I’ve identified:
Rubbery with Threads

Sparkly

Foamy Tubes

Something altogether different!

It is important to note these differences when ranking the yarns because the truth is we are not truly comparing apples to apples.
